Abstract

This thesis deals with the grammatical category of definiteness and presents a synchronic comparison of various types of reference and their respective means of expression used in Dutch and English. In the chapter devoted to classification of languages, both languages are put in the cultural and historical context. This is followed by general observations on the category of definiteness and its ways of expression and over the article as a word-class, its form and position. Based on a detailed description of the Dutch and the English system of articles, the formal differences in the way of expressing definiteness in both languages are summarized. In the chapter dealing with the system of reference, we present the basic types of reference used in Dutch and English and their respective means of expression. This chapter, too, is concluded by listing the formal and terminological differences. Quite close attention is paid also to the phenomenon of 'overt absence of a determiner' with nouns in both languages, a systematic treatment of which is usually not offered by the canonical grammar books. Tato diplomová práce se zabývá gramatickou kategorií urcenosti a predkládá synchronní systémovou konfrontaci ruzných typu odkazování a jejich vyjadrovacích prostredku v nizozemštine a anglictine. V kapitole venované klasifikaci jazyku zasazujeme oba jazyky do základního kulturnehistorického kontextu. Následují obecné poznámky o kategorii urcenosti a zpusobech jejího vyjadrování a o clenu jako zvláštním slovním druhu, jeho tvaru a pozici. Podrobný popis systému clenu v nizozemštine a anglictine uzavíráme shrnutím formálních rozdílu ve vyjadrování urcenosti v obou jazycích. V kapitole venované systému odkazování predstavujeme základní typy reference a jim odpovídající vyjadrovací prostredky užívané v nizozemštine a anglictine. Také tuto kapitolu uzavíráme shrnutím rozdílu formálních i terminologických. Relativne velkou pozornost venujeme také jevu "povrchové absence clenu" u substantiv v obou jazycích, jehož systematické zpracování klasické gramatiky obvykle nenabízejí. U substantiv v plurálu je situace pomerne prehledná, nebot povrchove nerealizovaný clen ve spojení s nimi vyjadruje bud referenci "generickou" nebo referenci "negenerickou neurcitou", pricemž v obou prípadech je pravidelným vyjadrovacím prostredkem clen nulový (zero article).
