Množství anglofonních románů inspirovaných vyprávěním otroků vydané v posledních čtyřiceti letech naznačuje, že spisovatelé stále považují umělecké ztvárnění otroctví za nezbytný prvek pro uvedení soudobých rasových diskurzů do kontextu minulé a současné americké zkušenosti. Konzistentní popularita novodobých vyprávění otroků vznikající v druhé polovině 20. století rovněž reflektuje postmoderní potřebu přehodnocovat a převypravovat minulost optikou tohoto palčivého období historie. Novodobé vyprávění otroků se jako žánr začíná formovat ve specifickém historickém momentu a román spisovatelky Octavie E. Butler Kindred je ukázkový příklad toho, jak se tento žánr ustanovoval a jak do něho pronikají mimotextové okolnosti jeho vzniku. As the number of neo-slave narratives published in the last 40 years suggests, fiction writers still consider slave narratives essential for contextualising the contemporary debate on racial politics in America. The consistent popularity of the genre reflects the demand for revising and retelling the past through the lens of the thorny period of American history. The neo-slave narrative emerges during a specific historical moment, and Octavia E. Butler's Kindred is among its prime examples - originally published in 1979, the novel helped to establish the genre, and gained a substantial critical interest as well as recognition among mass audiences. The scholarly response focuses predominantly on the themes of temporality and historicity, especially in the context of postmodern philosophy. These are, undoubtedly, the building blocks of the novel, but they should not eclipse other, perhaps less obvious, points for critical inquiry. The present thesis aims to interpret the novel through the lens of voice in order to broaden the existing research archive with an inclusive analysis touching upon concepts adjacent to the elements of voice, such as authorial authenticity and historical authority, racial discourses, rhetorical strategies and absences.
