dc.description.abstract | This thesis focuses on conditionals, unconditionals, correlatives, and free relatives in Baghdadi Arabic. The core of the thesis is the grammatical description of the constructions. Followingly, the results are partially discussed in dialectological and typological terms. The data were collected through elicitation with native speakers of the Baghdadi dialect, and to a lesser extent, the Ammani dialect. The work builds upon Grigore's (2005) study on conditionals and the research of SynSem group on unconditionals, correlatives, and free relatives. It confirms and expands their findings by providing a detailed description of the morphosyntactic strategies employed to form these constructions. The study also tests the hypothesis of the implicational hierarchy pertaining to the occurrence of interrogatives in the studied constructions and the hypothesis concerning the internal structure of doubling unconditionals. Besides introducing new findings about the Baghdadi and Ammani dialects, this thesis also formulates related open questions. The results contribute to the broader understanding of the morphosyntactic structures in Arabic dialects. Key words: Baghdadi Arabic, conditionals, unconditionals, correlatives, free relatives, Ammani Arabic, linguistic analysis, Arabic morphosyntax, Arabic dialektology | en_US |
