Anthony Eden a Suezská krize. Otázka obrany imperiálního dědictví v memoárech Full Circle

Abstract

Tématem této bakalářské práce je analýza postavy Anthonyho Edena a jeho činy během období Suezské krize, kdy působil v roli premiéra Británie. Práce na toto období nahlíží skrze stanovené výzkumné otázky, které se týkají především toho, zda činy a rozhodnutí Edena byly stále silně ovlivněny tradiční britskou imperiální politikou a snahou i nadále bránit imperiální odkaz. Jako hlavní pramen byly zvoleny memoáry tohoto britského politika, zejména kniha Full Circle. V úvodní části se práce zabývá jeho životopisem, díky němuž lze označit hlavní události během jeho života a také faktory, které jej nejvíce ovlivnily. Poté následuje kapitola, týkající se vztahu Británie a Blízkého východu, co se týče období po druhé světové válce. V další části se práce týká již samotných memoárů Full Circle, kde v kapitolách přinese klíčovou argumentaci, skrze níž se Anthony Eden snažil očistit svou zasaženou politickou reputaci, právě díky fatálnímu výsledku krize pro Británii. V závěrečné části, se práce zabývá odpovědí na hlavní výzkumnou otázku, tedy jak Eden charakterizoval a popsal své chápání britské imperiální historie v kontextu se svými vlastními činy během Suezské krize. This bachelor thesis focuses on the figure of Anthony Eden and the analysis of his actions during the Suez Crisis when he was the Prime Minister of Britain. The thesis looks at this period through the research questions, which are primarily concerned with whether Eden's actions and decisions were still strongly influenced by traditional British imperial policy and the desire to continue to defend the imperial legacy. The memoirs of this British politician, in particular the book Full Circle, were chosen as the main source. The opening part of the thesis focuses on his biography, which helps to identify the main events during his life and the factors that most influenced him. Then follows a chapter exploring Britain's relationship with the Middle East in the years after the Second World War. The next part of the thesis concerns the Full Circle memoirs themselves, where the chapters will present the key argument through which Anthony Eden tried to rehabilitate his damaged political reputation, because of the fatal result of the crisis for Britain. In the final section, the thesis focuses on the answer of the main research question, which is how Eden characterised and described his understanding of British imperial history in the context of his own actions during the Suez Crisis.
