Abstract

Tato práce představuje komparativní čtení hry Denise Johnstona The Old Lady Says 'No!' spolu s devíti expresionistickými hrami, s nimiž se setkal před premiérou hryThe Old Lady Says 'No!' v roce 1929, s cílem odhalit průniky motivů a technik mezi nimi. Mezi hrami jsou jak Beggar on Horseback George S. Kaufmana a Marca Connellyho, tak Země mnoha jmen Josefa Čapka, ale i díla Luigiho Pirandella, Augusta Strindberga, Ernsta Tollera, Eugena O'Neilla, Georga Kaisera a Elmera Rice. Cílem této práce je zhodnotit, jaké místo zaujímá The Old Lady mezi děl, která tvoří expresionistický žánr, a pokusit se vyrovnat se skutečností, že jednotlivé divadelní postupy a charakteristiky připisované expresionismu lze nalézt i v jiných žánrech. Úvod tvoří shrnutí děje The Old Lady, obecný přehled probíraných témat a strukturální schéma studie. První kapitola představuje expresionistické divadlo jako žánr. This thesis presents a comparative reading of Denis Johnston's The Old Lady Says 'No!' alongside nine expressionist plays that he was exposed to leading up to The Old Lady Says 'No!''s 1929 premiere, in order to uncover the intersections of motifs and techniques among them. The plays include both George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly's Beggar on Horseback and Josef Čapek's The Land of Many Names as well as works by Luigi Pirandello, August Strindberg, Ernst Toller, Eugene O'Neill, Georg Kaiser, and Elmer Rice. The aim of this thesis is to assess the The Old Lady holds a place among the tapestry of works that constitute the expressionist genre, and to reconcile the fact that individual theatrical techniques and characteristics ascribed to expressionism can also be found in other genres. The introduction consists of a plot summary of The Old Lady, a general overview of the topics covered and a structural layout of the study. The first chapter introduces expressionist theatre as a genre. The following chapter contains an overview of the development of the Dublin theatre scene and Johnston's involvement in the Dublin Drama League and later the Gate Theatre.
