Dialektika divočiny a civilizace: způsoby konceptualizace a reprezentace indiánů v díle Alberta Vojtěcha Friče

Abstract

Práce pojednává o způsobech pojetí odlišnosti a jejích konceptech v díle českého cestovatele Alberta Vojtěcha Friče. Rozebírá komplexnost vztahu mezi evropskou civilizací a jejími protějšky, které jsou klasifikovány jako jiné a odlišné. Práce se soustředí na oblast amerického kontinentu jako exotické lokality, která přitahuje pozornost Evropanů, a na původní obyvatele Ameriky, kteří podněcují evropskou imaginaci. Úvodní kapitoly tematizují evropské diskurzy o divoších od doby prvních zaoceánských expedic až do konce 19. století za účelem popsání základních konceptuálních praktik při reprezentaci amerických indiánů. Nastiňuje též způsoby reprezentace indiánů v české beletristické a publicistické literatuře 19. století a soustředí se při tom na dílo Josefa Václava Sládka. Hlavní část práce se zaměřuje na metody popisu, zachycení a zastupování indiánů v textových výstupech A. V. Friče. Krátce shrnuje jeho kariéru cestovatele a botanika a stručně rekonstruuje jednotlivé expedice do Jižní Ameriky. Snaží se identifikovat termíny, prostřednictvím kterých Frič pojednává o druhých, a určit kategorie, které používá pro interpretaci odlišnosti. Zvláštní zřetel je přikládán termínům civilizace a divošství, které Fričovi slouží jako hlavní klasifikátory identity. Práce dává v závěru též prostor netextovým metodám...

The thesis deals with approaches to and concepts of the otherness in the work of the Czech traveller Alberto Vojtěch Frič. It analyses a complexity of relationship between the European civilisation and its counterparts which are classified as other or different. The thesis focuses on the territory of the American continent treating it as an exotic locality, which attracts the attention of Europeans, and on the Native Americans, who stimulate the European imagination. The introductory chapters discuss European discourses on savages since the time of the first overseas expeditions until the end of the 19th century in order to describe main conceptual practices in the representations of American Indians. It also outlines the ways of representations of Indians in the Czech fiction and press in the 19th century concentrating on the work of Josef Václav Sládek. The main part of the thesis aims at methods of description, grasp and representation of Indians in textual outputs of A. V. Frič. It summarizes his career of traveller and botanist and briefly reconstructs particular expeditions into the South America. It attempts to identify the terms in which Frič grasps the other and define categories which he uses to interpret the otherness.
