English translation equivalents of Czech prepositions "s" and "na" (in parallel electronic texts)

Abstract

Tato práce si klade za cíl porovnat výskyty !eských p edložek na a s (a její vokalizované podoby se) s jejich anglickými p ekladovými ekvivalenty, a to z hlediska jejich syntaktických funkcí a význam". Práce je rozd#lena do dvou hlavních !ástí, teoretické a analytické. Teoretická !ást stru!n# pojednává o syntaktických a sémantických vlastnostech p edložek s p ihlédnutím k jejich specifik"m v obou jazycích. Zvláštní pozornost je v#nována tomu, jak jsou ob# zkoumané p edložky popsány v !eských teoretických a praktických pramenech - gramatikách, výkladovém slovníku a v reprezentativních !esko-anglických slovnících, v!etn# jejich standardních p ekladových ekvivalent". $ást praktická pak na základ# tohoto popisného aparátu zkoumá dvojici !eských text" a jejich p eklad". K analýze byly použity knihy Nesnesitelná lehkost bytí (1985) od Milana Kundery a Výchova dívek v Čechách (1994) od Michala Viewegha. Celkem bylo pomocí konkordan!ního programu ParaConc z korpusu excerpováno pro každou p edložku 100 p íklad" a jejich anglických prot#jšk", a to vždy prvních 50 výskyt" každé p edložky z obou text". Cílem analytické !ásti pak bylo zjistit míru korespondence mezi !eskými p edložkovými frázemi a jejich anglickými prot#jšky nejprve z hlediska syntaktických funkcí, jež plní, poté z hlediska význam", kterých nabývají....

The aim of this study is to analyze and describe the English translation equivalents of two Czech prepositions 'na' and 's' (including its vocalized form 'se') in texts of contemporary Czech fiction and their English translations. The study is divided into three major parts: a theoretical overview, an analysis and a conclusion. The theoretical survey consists of two parts, in which the syntactic and semantic characteristics of prepositions in general are dealt with and the status of prepositions in Czech and English is compared. The first, syntactic part provides an overview of the syntactic functions of the prepositional phrases. The semantic part describes the treatment of prepositional meanings in Czech and English grammars and focuses on the meanings attributed to 'na' and 's' in Czech grammars and monolingual and bilingual Czech-English dictionaries. The analytical part of the present paper will be preceded by a brief specification of the data on which the analysis was based. The analysis itself is divided into two parts, each of which comprises two subsections.
