Abstract

Práce je komentovaný překlad kapitoly "Laurence Sterne" z knihy Terryho Eagletona z původní angličtiny do češtiny. Při stylistické analýze výchozího textu jsem jej zařadil do tradice anglické stylistiky, tedy odborného textu založeného především na autoritě autora a jazykové kreativitě spíše než na kvantitativních vědeckých metodách. Jako prvky typické pro tento styl uvádím humor, odkazy na krásnou literaturu (a naopak nepřítomnost odkazů na jiné odborné publikace), tendenci k činění širokých závěrů. Lexikum je do jisté míry expresivní, ale v souladu s odborností textu se v textu vyskytují také termíny; větná skladba textu je jednoduchá. Všechny tyto faktory bylo třeba zachovat. Zároveň bylo nutné brát v potaz, že širší čtenářská obec v české oblasti bude mít menší povědomí o Laurenci Sternovi a jeho díle, ale i o žánru anglického románu v 18. století. Na několika místech jsem tedy v překladu musel text lokalizovat a explikovat, aby cizí prvky nepůsobily rušivě. Přílišné lokalizační tendenci jsem se však snažil vyhýbat, vzhledem k didaktické a odborné povaze textu by totiž nebylo vhodné měnit denotáty. Při překladu tak docházelo především ke konstitutivním posunům vycházejícím ze skutečnosti, že kapitola využívá expresivní jazyk a obecně s jazykem pracuje kreativně a z nedostatku přímých...

The practical portion of this bachelor's thesis is a translation of the chapter "Laurence Sterne" form Terry Eagleton's book The English Novel: An Introduction from English to Czech. The theoretical part is concerned with analyzing the original text stylistically and with the categorization of the translation shifts that occurred in the translation. In terms of stylistic analysis, the text is an example of English essayistic style, relying on the authority of the author rather than scientific sources, utilizing humor, creative and expressive language and having a tendency to make authoritative statements. In terms of lexis, the text utilizes expressive language, but also, as the text is still scientific to a degree, it makes use of scientific terms, particularly from the area of literary theory. The syntactic structure of the text is largely simple. All the aforementioned aspects of the text needed to be present in the translation as well. At the same time, the translation has to work with the reality that Czech readers will likely be less aware of Laurence Sterne and his work. As such I had to localize certain aspects of the original text to make the translation more reader-friendly.
