English translation counterparts of the Russian conditional (by)

Abstract

Tato práce se zabývá různými významy ruské částice бы a jejich anglickými překladovými protějšky. Teoretická část se zaměřuje na různá použití бы v ruštině, včetně podmínkových a nepodmínkových konstrukcí, a porovnává je s anglickými protějšky s přihlédnutím k rozdílům mezi oběma jazyky, jako je absence rozlišení mezi přítomným/minulým kondicionálem v ruštině, použití různých modálních sloves v podmínkových souvětích a také absence přímých strukturálních protějšků některých ruských konstrukcí. Praktická analýza je provedena na 150 příkladech obsahujících бы v hlavní nebo vedlejší větě, čerpaných z paralelního rusko-anglického korpusu Intercorp. Empirická část zkoumá korespondenci významu a formy mezi originálem a ekvivalentem anglického překladu. Cílem této práce je analyzovat anglické ekvivalenty různých ruských konstrukce s бы a také se soustředit na tom, jaké aspekty ovlivňují výběr anglických překladových protějšků.

This thesis deals with the different meanings of the Russian particle бы and their English translation counterparts. The theoretical part focuses on the different uses of бы in Russian, including conditional and non-conditional constructions, and compares them with their English counterparts, taking into account the differences between the two languages, such as the absence of a present/past conditional distinction in Russian, the use of different modal verbs in conditional sentences and also the absence of direct structural counterparts of some Russian structures. The practical analysis is performed on 150 examples containing бы in the main or a subordinate clause, drawn from the parallel Intercorp corpus. The empirical part examines the correspondence of meaning and form between the original and the equivalent English translation. The aim of this work is to analyse the English equivalents of the various Russian constructions with бы and also to focus on what aspects influence the choice of the English translation counterparts.
